Dr. Phillips Center suing donor for unpaid sponsorship dollars

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts filed a lawsuit last month against CNL Charitable Foundation for a breach of contract.

According to court filings, CNL Charitable Foundation (a non-profit arm of CNL Financial Group) agreed to give $10 million to the Dr. Phillips Center for the naming rights of the outdoor plaza in front of the building. The Center would name it the Seneff Arts Plaza after CNL’s Executive Chairman, James Seneff, in exchange for those funds being paid out over ten years. Though, according to the Dr. Phillips Center, the Foundation failed to make its payments in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

The suit states that CNL Charitable Foundation is refusing to pay the funds as a result of the pandemic-inspired Frontyard Festival, which took place in the plaza, during which, all mentions of the plaza’s full sponsored name were pushed to the side.

The arts center is claiming it did its due diligence leading up to the Frontyard Festival activation, and that CNL should still be held responsible due to the contract it signed. Their legal team is seeing compensation for alleged damages and attorney fees.

CNL recently clapped back via an article by Orlando Business Journal‘s Logan Dragone saying Dr. Phillips Center exhibits “a blatant disregard for the rights of a donor.”
