The City of Orlando was one of eight recipients in 2023 to receive a $1 million grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies as part of its Public Art Challenge program to “enhance the vibrancy of cities” through public art.
After receiving applications from 154 cities across 40 states, eight winners were selected for the third Public Art Challenge to execute their projects over the next two years: Atlanta, Georgia, Baltimore, Maryland, Honolulu, Hawaii, Houston, Texas, Orlando, Florida, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Phoenix, Arizona, and Salt Lake City, Utah.
Orlando will be using its awarded funds to support an installation entitled, “Art Pollination: Building Food Justice Through Creativity.” The collaborative project will feature local non-profits like Black Bee Honey, 4 Roots, Hebni Nutrition Consultants, Ideas For Us, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, and the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, as well as the Downtown Arts District and Snap! Orlando.
The City has named Juan William Chavez (Website) as the lead artist for the project, but they are also looking to bring on another 20 local artists to participate in the project by conducting workshops, hosting community gatherings, and engaging the public in the process. Artists from all disciplines are invited to apply. Selected artists will help to create interactive installations at “strategically chosen locations” around Orlando, including the Urban Trail, community centers, the Downtown Arts District, and at City Hall.
