The Public Art Advisory Board pitched Winter Park City Commission at the May 22 meeting asking that they consider a new mural program for the city’s Chain of Lakes canal system.
The Board has been looking into what it would take for an artist or group of artists to paint a series of murals to spruce up the city’s canal system walls, specifically the Fern and Venetian canals. They were asking the City Commission for approval to release an RFQ and RFP but were shut down by the commissioners who didn’t drink the Kool-aid.
They were expecting to pay roughly $20-$30 per foot to a winning artist.
The Winter Park Chain of Lakes consists of six main bodies of water that are connected through a system of narrow canals, that’s become popular for boaters and paddlers, with most setting out from the Dinky Dock Park.
The canals were featured in The Places Where We Live, a three-part Hulu series that looks at stories inspired by real people, places, and events across the country. “Boat Tour,” penned by Bernardo Britto, is one of the episodes in the series and it shines a light on a boat tour operator who always tells the same jokes day in and day out and a lonely woman who works from home and watches him every day as he pulls through the Venetian Canal.
