The Orlando Museum of Art (Website) has announced that Kenya (Robinson) has been named as the recipient of the 2018 Florida Prize in Contemporary Art.
Jenya (Robinson) is a Gainesville-based artist specializing in multimedia like performance, sculpture, and installation works. Her work investigates the role of blackness as the delineator of politically-identifiable whiteness in the United States and her chosen installation for Florida Prize, #WhiteManInMyPocket, looked at “white male heteronormative supremacy as an idea not restricted to phenotype, gender, or nationality.”
As the winner of the Prize, (Robinson) received a $20,000 award, underwritten by Gail and Michael Winn, who have since endowed the Florida Prize series.
The People’s Choice Award was given to Carlos Betancourt along with a check for $2,500.
