Local do-gooder and owner of United Trophy, Syd Levy, passed away January 29 at the age of 88.

Levy, who built Flea World, “America’s largest flea market,” was also a philanthropist and supported multiple charities, especially the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida, of which he was a Platinum level sponsor – the Downtown service center is named after Levy and his wife Marianne.

“We can all do a little more to help give children in need a chance at a meaningful tomorrow.” – Syd Levy

Levy paid for the Red Tails Monument to the Tuskegee Airmen, installed in the green outside the Orlando Science Center – in honor of a group of African-American military pilots who fought in World War II. The Orlando Science Center has placed a memorial wreath at the sculpture in Levy’s honor.

Levy, a Canadian, moved to Florida in 1968. He died from respiratory complications.
