Leu Gardens (Website) has been heavily damaged from the recent Hurricane Irma.

Due to what appears to have been some sort of microburst/tornado occurrence, dozens of trees have been leveled and the historic Leu House has also been damaged.

The Director of the historic botanical gardens, Robert Bowden, took a video tour with Mayor Dyer to survey the damage earlier on Monday, which you can watch above. You can see how a branch of a nearby live oak punctured the house, which dates back to 1888.

Bowden states, “That’s the great thing about a garden, they’re very dynamic. They change and you’d expect that. You wouldn’t like this much change, but plants always come back.”

As seen in the video, the parks are covered in leaf litter and debris and will take lots of work to get back into show condition.

Bowden also stated that the City lost roughly 200 trees during Hurricane Charlie compared to 40 or 50 during Irma.

Scroll down to see photos that were posted on Commissioner Robert Stuart’s Twitter feed of his subsequent tour of the damage in the gardens.
