World-renowned artist and urban designer, Candy Chang, will speak at Rollins College on January 18 at 7:30 p.m., thanks to the on-going generosity of the Winter Park Institute‘s free public lecture.

Chang has spearheaded a number of game-changing community engagement projects in her career, but is best known for the Before I Die project, which invites people to answer the question “Before I die I want to ____ ” by filling in the blank on pop-up chalkboards. The first installation took place in an abandoned home in New Orleans after she lost a loved one but has grown to over 2,000 registered walls in over 70 countries at the time of this post.

Chang was named one of the Top 100 Leaders in Public Interest Design by Impact Design Hub and is an Oprah Magazine-recognized “Live Your Best Life” Local Hero.

“Through a series of large-scale projects that combine installation art with social activism, Chang has encouraged people to engage with public spaces and let their voices be heard.” – O Magazine

Chang will speak to her creative process of inspiring personal reflection, and provoking “new ideas for community and well-being.”

Editor’s Note: Our ongoing I Wish This Was column was inspired by Chang’s “I Wish This Was” public art series and she even gave us her blessing before we launched it in January, 2015.
