The Florida Prize in Contemporary Art is an annual exhibition that recognizes ten outstanding Florida artists. The artists range from emerging to mid-career, with significant achievements and exhibitions under their belts.
The artists to be featured in the next Florida Prize in Contemporary Art at the Orlando Museum of Art include:
- Domingo Castillo: Miami-based artist has received the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award (2015), South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship (2012), and the Miami New Times Mastermind Grant (2012), among others.
- William Cordova: Peruvian-born artist whose site-specific work deals with issues of transition and displacement.
- Coco Fusco: Interdisciplinary artist and writer, and the Andrew Banks Endowed Professor of Art at the University of Florida. Fusco recently hosted a screening of her TED Talk at the Orlando Museum of Art. More on that HERE.
- Mark Gerstein: Award-winning filmmaker and Associate Professor of Film at UCF. Credits include, Rogue Moone, The Pickle, The Cape, and The Final Days.
- Aramis Gutierrez:Miami-based painter and man of few words.
- Dana Hargrove: Born in Scotland, but based in Orlando.
- Lisa Iglesias: Gainesville-based artist.
- Carl Juste: A Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and founder of the IPC Visual Lab, where he teaches.
- Ralph Provisero: Miami-based contemporary American artist with an MFA from the University of Miami School of Art and Art History.
- Chase Westfall: Hailing from Gainesville, Westfall’s work looks at the cultural meaning and societal function of violence.
The exhibition’s Opening Preview Party will be held on June 2, from 7-10 p.m. The exhibit will run through August 20, 2017.
