On Thursday late afternoon from 4-8 p.m., abstract artists and good friends Marlene London and Mimi Hwang will bring in reed improviser and jazz musician Danny Jordan for the In-Between Continues: Pop-Up Art Party event at CityArts in downtown Orlando.
Jordan will play the sax and flute as musical interpretations of Hwang and London’s paintings in the gallery. He is a great musician who may be best known for his work with the Sam River’s Orchestra (Website). Don’t underestimate his solo work and other collaborations though; I think his solo improv work is where he excels. The event is sponsored by the Timucua Foundation (Website) and a meet and greet will start at 4 p.m. with Jordan’s performance running from 6-8 pm.
FAVO (Website) will host its monthly open house event this Friday and Saturday evening. On both nights, you can stroll the former motel and check out all the studios. Read more about the hotel-turned-gallery HERE in a previous column.
The Enzian is doing it again. They are showing one of my favorite films by one of my favorite directors: a fully restored Seven Samurai by the brilliant Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, starring Japanese superstar Toshiro Mifune. The 1954 black-and-white film has influenced many filmmakers and trendsetters; some were successful, and some might be considered less successful. Everything from George Lucas’s Star Wars to John Sturges ‘ Magnificent Seven, Pachinko Machines based on the movie, and man buns in many parts of the world are examples of the influence. Click HERE for information on the screening times or to purchase a ticket.
On Saturday and Sunday, the Enzian is showing a couple of movies that don’t need an introduction. The classic Godzilla is showing on Saturday at noon. On Saturday and Sunday nights at 8 p.m., you can watch Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, Which Stars Jack Nicholson and the late Shelly Duvall.
As a side note, in the mid-90s, I stayed at the Stanley Hotel (Website) in Colorado, where the film took place. I slept surprisingly well.
If you are still up, Golden Flower (Bandcamp) is dropping their first EP on Friday night at midnight at The Nook on Robinson. They’re a jazz, prog-rock, South American-inspired band whose members are all virtuosos, but not the kind who do boring, impressive solos. Their solos aren’t boring; they have plenty of soul.
Sunday at noon, Uncomfortable Brunch (Website) will be showing Hard Candy. I have never seen it, but after reading the IMDB site, I know it is consistent with the mission that curators Josh Martin and Kat Whitacre uphold, “sharing acclaimed films that might not set the tone to eat scrambled eggs with friends.” I am paraphrasing, but I think you get it.
Editor’s Note: The mission statement for Uncomfortable Brunch is “Delicious food. Good friends. Unsettling cinema.“
