Downtown Arts District and CityArts are expanding their ongoing 3rd Thursday art event into the streets this month, with the first-ever closure of Magnolia Avenue (for art reasons anyway).

As part of the expanded event offerings, CityArts will be placing a stage with live entertainment outdoors including a performance by David Schweizer/Life on Mars, there will be artists painting live in the street, a vendor market, all the way down to Heritage Square in front of the Orange County History Center.

The arts organizations are also holding an open call for proposals for installations in empty storefronts in downtown Orlando. Artworks should be interactive and “elicit a certain feeling or atmosphere.”

The first installation is in the former window of the now-shuttered Urban Turban restaurant space at 100 E. Pine Street is scheduled to open this upcoming 3rd Thursday on May 16. The installation is expected to be in place for the next 60 days or earlier if the space is rented. The work is being done by Red Tape and Color Me Places, the team behind the temporary mural in Lake Eola’s new pocket park, and will have an “Alice in Wonderland” theme.
