Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off on September 15 and celebrates the diverse histories and cultures of people of Hispanic descent. Join Orange County Library System as we highlight Hispanic Heritage with programs that explore and celebrate Hispanic culture. Library branches will host in-person and virtual events throughout the month, from crafts and cooking classes to art history lessons and retrospectives. Traditional folk performances from Mexican Danza and Viva Mexico Folklore as well as up-tempo party music from Latin pop band La Calle Band will keep the celebration going. For more information, visit ocls.info/hispanic-heritage-month.
The 5th Annual Melrose Film Festival premieres Friday, September 9. This year’s festival features selections chosen from over 2,000 submissions from more than 90 countries. The festival is entirely virtual, with categories including animation, documentaries, shorts, music videos and more. Melrose Center staff will also offer virtual and in person events on all things film worthy. Visit ocls.info/melrose-film-festival for screenings, information about virtual events, and to vote for the audience choice award.
OCLS continues to offer conversations with award-winning writers with its Author Talk series. In September, featured authors include child development expert Dr. Michele Borba and her book Thrivers: Surprising Reasons Why Some Kids Struggle and Others Thrive; prolific New York Times bestselling author and journalist Simon Winchester; and Pulitzer Prize finalist Hernan Diaz, who will discuss his new novel, Trust. Check the calendar of events at libraryc.org/ocls for more information and a full listing of Author Talk events.
