Rollins College and the Rollins Museum of Art are unveiling a new sculpture this week, commissioned by alumni Barbara and Ted Alfond, for the museum’s Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art.
The sculpture is by British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare (Instagram) and features a collection of 600 hardcover books, each boun in Dutch wax fabric and embossed with the name of a poet, philosopher, or historian with personal ties to the Great Migration when six million African Americans fled the American South in search for a better life.
The sculpture is part of Shonibare’s Libraries series, celebrating the diversity of global populations.
An unveiling celebration will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, February 24 in the Kathleen W. Rollins Hall.
