“This is the work of a loser who has no talent. I scrawled through his tag so he gets no respect. This beautiful mural wasn’t even finished yet. We try to make Orlando beautiful, and this garbage tries to steal our joy. Help us! Report this vandalism at grafitti@orlando.gov. Report vandals to 911. We need your help to stop this!”
– MILLS 50 MAIN STREET MANAGER JOANNE GRANT
A mural that was recently installed on the back of an Ivanhoe Village warehouse facing the Orlando Urban Trail (Website) was defaced this week by some local taggers.
The mural, which was still in the process of being painted by local artist Corwin Blackwell, depicts an interpretation of the Dinky Line Train which used to run between Rollins College and downtown Orlando along the same route on which the urban trail now follows. More on that HERE. And don’t forget there’s a song about it too.
The section of trail is completely unlit at night and surrounded by mostly industrial uses, with the closest activity zones being Ten 10 Brewing and Quantum Leap Winery, both of which close earlier in the evening.
The City of Orlando has a Graffiti Program that it runs through Keep Orlando Beautiful that works in partnership with other city departments and agencies to locate and remove graffiti on public property but can only assist with the removal from tags that are located on private property. Orlando residents can report graffiti on public property via the Graffiti Hotline at 407-254-4723 or online HERE.
If you want to report graffiti on private property, you should call the Orlando Police Department at 321-235-5300 to fill out a vandalism report. If you’re outside of city limits (you can tell by your street sign – fountains mean you’re in the city) you can call 407-836-3111 to report the issue to the county.
A local Instagram account, @TheCityNotSoBeautiful, has been documenting a noticeable uptick in graffiti in the Mills 50 area during the pandemic.
